FKA Twigs has launched a lawsuit against an indie band called The Twigs, accusing them of ‘weaponizing’ trademark law to demand a ‘seven-figure payout’ over their similar names. The British singer, born Tahliah Barnett, claims the band has been sending her cease-and-desist letters threatening to sue her unless they’re paid. However, FKA Twigs’ lawyers argue that the band has known about her stage name for over a decade and shouldn’t be allowed to hold her name hostage now.
The dispute between FKA Twigs and The Twigs, twin sisters Laura and Linda Good, has been ongoing since 2014 when the band first sued the singer for trademark infringement. The case was dropped after a judge refused to grant a restraining order. FKA Twigs’ lawyers claim that the band ‘simply disappeared’ for years before sending cease-and-desist letters in 2024, and that their accusations are unfounded as it’s ‘inconceivable’ that listeners would confuse the two artists. The lawsuit is the latest development in the long-simmering dispute, with FKA Twigs seeking to put an end to the band’s demands.
